IRS Payment Instructions

IRS Electronic Payment options

The IRS offers fast, secure online tools for tax payments and refunds. Click below to find instructions for how to make a payment or check on your refund status.

IRS Direct Pay (Individuals)

This is the simplest way to make a one-time payment directly from a checking or savings account. It does not require pre-registration.

    1. Gather information. You will need your Social Security number (SSN), filing status, your bank’s routing and account numbers, and a previous tax return to verify your identity.
    2. Navigate to the website. Go to the official IRS Payments page
    3. Choose how you pay. For Direct Pay with bank account click here. To pay with a card or digital wallet click here (Fees apply).
    4. Enter your payment details. Select the reason for your payment (e.g., Balance Due, Estimated Tax), the tax year, and the amount.
    5. Verify your identity. You will need to enter your SSN, filing status, and address exactly as it appeared on a previous tax return.
    6. Enter your bank/Card information. Provide your bank’s routing and account numbers. You can schedule the payment for a future date, up to 365 days in advance.
    7. Review and submit. Confirm that all information is correct, then submit your payment. The IRS will provide an instant confirmation number and can send a confirmation email.

IRS Direct Pay (Business)

    3. Click “Direct Pay with bank account”
    4. Scroll down for Business tax payments. click “pay business tax”
    5. Click “Make a payment” or you can look up a business tax payment here
    6. Enter your payment details. Select the reason for your payment (e.g., Balance Due, Estimated Tax), the tax year, and the amount.
    7. Verify your identity. You will need to enter your SSN, filing status, and address exactly as it appeared on a previous tax return.
    8. Enter your bank/Card information. Provide your bank’s routing and account numbers. You can schedule the payment for a future date, up to 365 days in advance.
    9. Review and submit. Confirm that all information is correct, then submit your payment. The IRS will provide an instant confirmation number and can send a confirmation email.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (Business or Individuals)

This is a free service provided by the U.S. Treasury and is recommended for businesses and individuals who make multiple tax payments throughout the year, such as estimated taxes.

Step 1: Enroll (First-time users only)

    1. Go to the website: Visit EFTPS and select the “Enroll” tab.
    2. Provide your information: Enter your taxpayer identification number (either an Employer Identification Number or SSN), your bank account information, and business or personal contact information.
    3. Wait for credentials: After submitting your information, you will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) via U.S. mail within 5 to 7 business days.

Step 2: Make a payment (After enrolling)

    1. Log in: Go to EFTPS and use your EIN/SSN, PIN, and password to log in.
    2. Select “Make a Payment.”
    3. Enter tax details. Fill in the required fields, including the tax form (e.g., 1040, 1120), tax type (e.g., Estimated Tax, Balance Due), the tax period, and the payment amount.
    4. Schedule the payment. Choose the date for the funds to be withdrawn. You can schedule payments up to 365 days in advance.
    5. Submit and record. Submit the payment and save the confirmation number for your records.

Other Electronic Payment Options

IRS Online Account: An individual taxpayer can sign in to their secure online account to view their balance, payment history, and make a same-day payment.

Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW): This is a free option available when e-filing a federal tax return through tax preparation software or with a tax professional. The payment is directly debited from your bank account.

Debit Card, Credit Card, or Digital Wallet: For a fee charged by a third-party processor, taxpayers can pay online, by phone, or with the IRS2Go mobile app. Employers cannot use this option for payroll taxes.

Refunds

This is the fastest way to get your refund. Deposit into your checking, savings, or retirement account.

Setting up Direct Deposit:

    1. While preparing your return, choose Direct Deposit for your refund.
    2. Enter your bank info: 9-digit routing number, account number, and select checking or savings (use a voided check to avoid typos).

  • Your Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN)
  • Your filing status
  • The exact refund amount on your return
